Into That Darkness by Gitta Sereny

Based on 70 hours of interviews with Franz Stangl, commandant of Treblinka (the largest of the five Nazi extermination camps), this book bares the soul of a man who continually found ways to rationalize his role in Hitler's final solution.

Gitta Sereny was a leading European journalist with a particular interest in and knowledge of the Third Reich. She has contributed to the Daily Telegraph, Sunday Times, and The Independent in London, as well as Die Zeit and Le Nouvel Observateur in France. She has contributed to The New York Times Magazine, The New York Review of Books, and Vanity Fair in the United States. Into Darkness: An Investigation of Conscience, The Invisible Children, and Albert Speer: His Struggle with Truth are some of her works. She has two children and two grandkids and lived in London with her photographer husband, Don Honeyman. She passed away on June 14, 2012.
