Nagara was born and reared in Indonesia before relocating to the United States in 1988. He went to the San Francisco Bay Area after studying zoology and philosophy at UC Davis and working as a graphic designer for a variety of social change organizations before forming the Design Action Collective, a worker-owned cooperative design firm in Oakland, California.
