Jane Austen's Family by Maggie Lane
This book offers an intimate and intriguing account of Jane Austen's relations, from 1704, when her great-grandmother was left a widow with six children to support, through to 1870, and the destinies of her many nephews and nieces. Drawing extensively on letters and memoirs written by the Austen family over a period of 150 years, this book traces the development of the family from vigorous Georgian opportunism to respectable Victorian gentility.
Maggie Lane is a school librarian and lives in Bristol with her son and daughter. Her other books include the highly acclaimed Jane Austen's England, Literary Daughters and A Charming Place: Bath in the Life and Times of Jane Austen. She has published articles in the Annual Report of the Jane Austen Society nad in Persuasions, the journal of the Jane Austen Society of North America. In a lighter vein she is the author of a series of literary quiz and puzzle books including The Bronte Sisters Quiz and Puzzle Book and The Jane Austen Quiz and Puzzle Book.
