Gerald M. Ackerman is a California native. He received his education at the University of California, Berkeley, Munich, and Princeton University, where he earned his Ph.D. He went on to teach at Bryn Mawr College, Stanford University, and St. John's University. Fullbright Chair at Petersburg State University. He was a lecturer at Pomona College in California for twenty years.

Art Bulletin, the Gazette of Fine Arts, Burlington Magazine, Art News, Archivio de Arte Espaol, Arts, and other periodicals have featured his essays and reviews. He is the author of The Orientalists of the British School, The Orientalists of the American School, and Charles Bargue and Jean-Léon Gérôme, as well as the catalogue of the Gérôme exhibition at Dayton, Ohio in 1972. At ACR Edition, there is a drawing course. He has written studies on other nineteenth-century European and American artists, as well as the idea of Academic Art, the history of the Salons, and a variety of other topics. He is also the author of three plays that have been staged in California.
