John Constable by Bailey Anthony
John Constable was born in East Bergholt near the river Stour. He was destined for his father's business of milling and grain-shipping. But, he was a dogged fighter: he persuaded his family that he should become an artist, and he continued to paint landscapes.
Anthony Bailey's writing is always idiosyncratic, and he has won high praise for his books about artists: two original studies of Rembrandt, an admired and respected full-length life of Turner, and his masterpiece about Vermeer, described (by art critic John Russell) as 'a book to read and re-read for ever'. He lives in Essex.
