Fresh out of college, Gesshin Claire Greenwood found her way to a Buddhist monastery in Japan and was ordained as a Buddhist nun. She began meditating at the age of 19 and went on to study in India's Bodh Gaya, where she was temporarily ordained in the Burmese Theravada lineage. She graduated from Wesleyan University with a degree in English in 2009 and spent the most of her twenties practicing Buddhism in India and Japan. She obtained dharma transmission in 2015 after ordination with Seido Suzuki Roshi in 2010. She is presently pursuing a master's degree in East Asian Studies at the University of Southern California, where her research focuses on women in Buddhism and feminism in a global context.
