Sargent Shriver, her father, was diagnosed with the disease in 2003 and died in 2011 at the age of 95. Shriver co-executive produced the Emmy Award-winning four-part HBO documentary series The Alzheimer's Project in 2009, which brought the awful disease to millions of people's attention. Grandfather, Do You Know Who I Am? is one of the series' films. Shriver testified before the United States Senate in 2009.
The Senate Special Committee on Aging wants Congress to make Alzheimer's disease a national priority. Shriver's advocacy was crucial in the approval of the National Alzheimer's Project Act in December 2010. Shriver is also a member of the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health's advisory board and continues to advocate for patients and their families.
