Kenpo by Eric Shahan
A translation of an 1899 self-defense manual based on an 1888 police manual. The purpose of this manual was to introduce 16 Arresting Techniques that can be used by the military, police or civilian self-defense. In 1888 a Samurai named Hisatomi Tetsutaro consulted with numerous schools of Jujutsu and formulated a set of 16 Torite or arresting techniques and titled his book The Police Officer's Essential Illustrated Guide: Kenpo. In this era Kenpo, Jujutsu (Jiu-jitsu) and Torite (Arresting Techniques) were all interchangeable words. This book was originally only available to police officers, however it was later released to the general public. This book, Kenpo: An Illustrated Instructor's Manual, was published a decade later in 1898, editor and author Inoguchi Matsunosuke consulted with the original author, Hisatomi Tetsutaro, and reformatted the book. The same 16 Arresting Techniques were re-edited and re-illustrated. The same 16 techniques are presented in both the 1888 version and the 1899 version, however the focus was shifted away from a police-only method to general self-defense. The final version included both Kappo, or resuscitation, and Haya-nawa, or rope restraining techniques. Kenpo: An Illustrated Instructor's Manual offers a unique chance to see how early Jujutsu was practiced.| SKU | Unavailable |
