Kriss Akabusi on Track by Ted Harrison

This book tells the story of Kriss Akabusi, the record-breaking 400 metres hurdler and gold medallist. Born of Nigerian parents, Kriss was separated from them in early childhood and he and his younger brother were alternately cared for and mistreated by foster parents in England - an unhappy time which culminated in the two boys being found alone in Kings Cross station and taken into care. Their parents had lost touch through the Biafran War. At 16 Kriss left the children's home for the army, where his athlethic prowess first began to show. The author traces Kriss's story through trials, temptations and tragedies: the discovery of his royal heritage - Akabusi is a Nigerian prince by birth - his marriage to German-born Monika, the birth of his daughters and his sporting triumphs. The book also tells of Kriss's strong faith and religious beliefs.
