Young King Stanislaw Antoni Poniatowski was a perfect illustration of the contradictions of Europe's ideological and religious viewpoints: worshipped reason but was led by the heart. Stanislaw was eventually obliged to watch the destruction of his lifes work, and ultimately forced to abdicate, a broken man, deceived and disillusioned.
Adam Zamoyski was born in New York of Polish parents but has lived most of his life in England. He was educated at Downside and Queen's College, Oxford.
