Valerie Michael is a founding member of the Association of Designer Leatherworkers and has been a full-time leatherworker for over twenty years. She began her leather working career in Bristol in 1971. She is one of the few people who are allowed to use the unique 'Russia' leather which was salvaged from the Metta Catharina, a Russian ship which sank in 1786 off the Cornish coast.
