Beloved author Henri Nouwen often expressed his belief that what is most personal is also most universal, and he was not afraid to draw on his own life experiences so he could help others. Six months after the death of his mother, during a stay at the Trappist Abbey of the Genesee, Nouwen explored his own grief at her passing. He expressed his thoughts about the spiritual significance of death and life in a letter to his father, which ultimately became A Letter of Consolation. Nouwen dedicated this book to "all those who suffer the pain that death can bring and who search for new life."
Henri J. M. Nouwen (1932-1996) was the author of With Open Hands, Reaching Out, The Wounded Healer, Making All Things New, and many other bestsellers.
