Gertrude Bell (1868-1926) was a British intelligence officer, linguist, and adventurer. Bell's daring journeys into the Islamic realm of the Middle East in the late 1800s provided some of the first Western understandings of the culture and people of modern-day Iraq and Iran. Several experts still believe her translations of Hafiz's poems to be the most accurate of any in the English language.
