Life of Riley by Anthony Cronin
Written in the 1960s, Anthony Cronin's comic novel Life of Riley centres around the literary scene in Dublin in the 1950s, and follows occasional poet Riley's misadventures after he quit his job as assistant to the secretary of a Dublin grocers' association, in favour of beggardom.
Anthony Cronin is an outstanding figure on the Irish literary landscape. As well as ten collections of poetry, he has written a number of admired prose works, including biographies of Flann O'Brien and Samuel Beckett, the classic memoir of Dublin in the 1950s, Dead as Doornails, novels and collections of essays. He is married to the writer Anne Haverty and lives in Dublin. He was elected a Saoi of Aosdana in 2003, a distinction conferred for exceptional artistic achievement.
