Little Tramp by Tobi Little Deer

A little dog finds himself alone in the vastness of Manhattan after his owner has an accident while they are out for a walk. His two-year journey brings him to familiar neighborhoods and famous landmarks, but also to New York City's more cheerless underside. On the street he meets people in need, and by his companionship becomes an agent of change. Along the way he encounters other dogs, mostly larger breeds like pit bulls, some trained fighters, others gentle and caring whose family he joins. As successive safe havens collapse around him he grows increasingly streetwise, but eventually it seems danger will win out. A resilient, tough little dog who feels love and hurt simply, as dogs do, he perseveres in the hope that one day he will get back to his owner, his friend.

Tobi Little Deer, the author's pen name, is taken from the little dog who inspires his stories. The author, of French-Canadian background with degrees from the Sorbonne and Brown, has published books translated from French to English, as well as theater pieces, while teaching both languages and their literatures in Paris and New York. He lives in Greenwich Village, New York City, with the real Tobi.
