Despite his father's-and the town's-disapproval of their friendship, Turner spends time with Lizzie, and it opens up a whole new world to him, filled with the mystery and wonder of Maine's rocky coast. The two soon discover that the town elders, along with Turner's father, want to force the people to leave Lizzie's island so that Phippsburg can start a lucrative tourist trade there. Turner gets caught up in a spiral of disasters that alter his life-but also lead him to new levels of acceptance and maturity. This sensitively written historical novel, based on the true story of a community's destruction, highlights a unique friendship during a time of change. Author's note.

Gary D. Schmidt is a professor of English at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is the author of, most recently, Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy--which won Newbery and Printz Honors--as well as First Boy and The Wednesday Wars. Schmidt lives in a 150-year-old farmhouse in Alto, Michigan, where he is a swinger of birches and a mender of walls.

Henri Sorensen is a Danish artist who has illustrated over 20 books for children, including I Love You As Much . . ., The Yellow Star: The Legend of King Christian X of Denmark; and Christmas in the Trenches. His work can be found in The Very Best Children's Book Illustration, published by the Society of Illustrators. He lives in Risskov, Denmark, with his wife and two daughters.
