Want to knit but can’t, or just want to try a new method? Maybe loom knitting is for youMs Phelps’ fourth book shows how even a beginner can make a variety of throws and blankets, for babies and anybody else. As with the other books (also reviewed on this site) you can expect some excellent instructions that make mastering the technique reasonably simple. Several types of loom are covered in some detail, both in telling you the merits and uses of each one and how to use it. You can discover what you need to buy to get started and very importantly why you need it. I particularly like this as I hate not knowing why I am having to obtain some arcane item when starting a new craft. There are plenty of clear drawn diagrams showing how to cast on, do the different stitches, join panels etc together with short captions. In short this book boasts a really in-depth look at just about everything you need to know in order to use a loom, whatever you want to make. The patterns are all for throws and blankets in here, but there is a wide range of sizes, designs and types – twenty projects in total. I think my favorite is the baby blanket adorned with all the letters of the alphabet, perfect for teaching them young! There is a whole section for babies, another on throws and afghans and a third on bed coverings. At the back of the book I was impressed by the page on exact sizes of all the looms used, giving details about what they are made of, gauge, what yarns they are suitable for and what knitting needles they correspond with. There is even a guide to washing your new creations. If you are wondering where to buy them there are details, but only for US inhabitants. In short, if you want to learn how to use a loom and fancy making some blankets then this is a great book to get.

I don’t normally do the knitting reviews here, but my yarn editor is otherwise engaged, so I’ll just say that, if someone would be prepared to make a few of these for me, I’d be very happy. The instructions are simple and the photographs of the finished results beautifully done. I can’t say whether the book goes into enough detail, but it looks as though it does and the introductory chapters on process and stitches appear admirably clear.
