The Love Poems by Ovid
These translations of Ovid's love poems seek to present them in a witty idiomatic style. The translator believes rhyme to be essential and has used it throughout. This volume includes the version of the "Art of Love" by B.P.Moore with some small revisions by the translator. Ovid's poetry was original and innovative. The setting of his poems is Augustan Rome, sharply depicted in a series of lively vignettes of its cosmopolitan society. Under the surface of Ovid's wit there runs an undercurrent of serious meaning - the theme of the poet's complete control of his medium and his art and a proud consciousness of achievements registered and yet to come.Ovid was a Roman poet who wrote about love, abandoned women, and mythological transformations. He is known as the master of the elegiac couplet.
