The Man Called Cash by Steve Turner

One of the most influential figures in American music and pop-culture, Johnny Cash is an icon to people of all ages. Steve Turner sifts the man from the legend and presents a picture of the often contradictory figure with unflinching honesty, getting close to the heart of the perfomer known throughout the world as the Man in Black. The Man Called Cash follows the star on his stumbling journey from the cotton fields of Arkansas to the drawing rooms of presidents. It details his self-destructiveness and brushes with the law, as well as his generosity and status as American icon - and keeping in view throughout the deep, enduring faith that informed his life and work. We see Johnny Cash not only as performer and recording artist, but also as neighbour, church-goer, fisherman, father, brother, husband and friend.
'Johnny Cash was unquestionably one of the most gifted and unusual men I ever knewMy wife Ruth and I considered Johnny and June two of our dearest friends, and we miss them both deeply. In this highly readable biography, Steve Turner viidly captures the remarkable story of Johnny's life, from beginning to end - a life marked by repeated struggles and successes. Most of all, it was a life marked by great faith in Jesus Christ - a faith that carried him through difficulties that would have overwhelmed a lesser person. Johnny Cash comes alive in this book, and you will be a better person for having read it.' Billy Graham
Steve Turner began his journalistic career as Features Editor of the rock monthly Beat Instrumental where he interviewed many of the key figures of early 1970s rock. He then became a freelance journalist, and wrote his first book Conversations with Eric Clapton. In 1998, Bono invited him to write the book for the U2 film Rattle and Hum. He has also written biographies of Cliff Richard, Van Morrison and Marvin Gaye.
