The Man in My Basement by Walter Mosley
Charles Blakey is a young black man whose life is slowly crumbling. His parents are dead, he can't find a job, he drinks too much, and his friends have begun to desert him. Worst of all, he's fallen behind on the mortgage payments for the beautiful home that's belonged to his family for generations.
?This may well be his most powerful novel to dateBlakey emerges as a character with the subtle depths to rival Mosley?s other much-loved creations? All of this is done not with the dead weight of philosophical treatise but with the light, racy touch of one of our greatest contemporary crime novelist? Uncut ?Mosley?s most provocative and impassioned novel yet? Kirkus Reviews ?Confirms him as possibly the most important current American writer? Time Out ?Mosley makes this such a lucid, sinuous book that its big issues are handled with idiosyncratic grace? audacious, inventive book? Scotsman ?A philosophical inquiry about corruption, made real through Mosley?s committed colloquialism and a willingness to debate without any final vote ? this is never a parable, but rather a complex story of negotiating rage and self-loathing? Times Literary Supplement ?A blissfully good read? The characters are robust, well-drawn speakers of sharp and intelligent dialogue. The plot moves swiftly and enticingly? New Books Mag ?His next work could well be a Pulitzer acceptance speech? Crime Time
