The Man Who Was Dorian Gray by Jerusha Hull Mccormack
In this biography, Jerusha Hull McCormack, an expert on Oscar Wilde and his circle, tells the story of John Gray, a working class boy whose passionate friendship with Oscar Wilde made his name as the reputed model for the character of Dorian Gray.
'Jerusha McCormack writes with authority and sympathy on the character of Father John Gray, the inspiration for the more famous DorianShe conveys an accurate image of a complex, troubled and contradictory man. She maps the world he moved through with great sureness. This is an important contribution to an understanding of Oscar Wilde and his contemporaries, how their strange reading of the Roman Catholic faith touched and tortured so many of them.' - Frank McGuinness, the award-winning playwright of 'Someone to Watch Over Me' (1992). 'Richly detailed and deeply sympathetic ... McCormack's portrait of fin-de-siecle society convinces.' - The Independent
JERUSHA HULL MCCORMACK is a leading scholar of Oscar Wilde and of the 1890s decadence, which Yeats so memorably called 'The Tragic Generation.' Her previous publications include Wilde the Irishman, which she edited, an academic study of John Gray and an edition of his selected prose. A Senior Lecturer in the English Department of University College Dublin Irish Studies, she is currently a Fellow of the Institute of Irish Studies at Queens University, Belfast.
