Mande Music by Eric Charry
This work traces the origins of one of Africa's richest and most sophisticated music cultures, from its beginnings in the 13th century Mali Empire, to the recording studios of Paris and New York. It focuses on four spheres of Mande music: hunter's music, music of the jelis or griots, and jembe.
ERIC CHARRY is a professor of music at Wesleyan University. His other books include Mande Music and Hip Hop Africa.
