Robert Michael Ballantyne was a Scottish-born children's novelist who lived from 1824 to 1895. Ballantyne was born in Edinburgh to a family of famous printers and publishers, and he had a passion for writing as a child. He returned to Scotland to work for the publisher Messrs Constable after spending six years in Canada with the Hudson's Bay Company. Ballantyne left business in 1856 to pursue a career in literature, and he began writing the series of adventure stories for children that bears his name. Hudson's Bay, his first book, was released in 1858, and he went on to publish over a hundred children's novels.
