This work offers an account and definition of the concept of ideology in Marxist thought, together with its role within historical materialism, demonstrating that while there is no coherent, single account of ideology in Marxs work, the interpretation given by Gramsci of historical materialism is consistent and compatible that of Marx.Andrea Sau is Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at St Mary's University Twickenham. He has also taught at the University of Hertfordshire and King’s College London, where he completed his PhD.
