Masks of God by Joseph Campbell
This third volume of Campbell's classic study of world mythologies covers the central myths that still inform the consciousness of the European West. Campbell traces these back to the cosmology built around the Levantine earth-goddess of the Bronze Age, changed but only partly suppressed by the patriarchal tribal invasions which shaped Judaic and Greek myth. He then examines the interplay of Persia, Greece, Rome, Byzantium, Islam and Christian Europe upon the matrix of ancient beliefs.
Joseph Campbell was educated at Columbia University and the Universities of Paris and Munich. For most of his career he taught at the Sarah Lawrence College, inspiring his students with his own absorption in the mythologies of the world. Among his many influential books, Myths to Live By and volumes 1 and 2 of The Masks of God - Primitive Mythology and Oriental Mythology - are also available from Souvenir Press. Volume 4 of The Masks of God, Creative Mythology is reissued with this one.
