She has a background in social work and sociology and has conducted numerous research studies on immigrants and refugees, health issues, young people, unemployment, and poverty attitudes over the years. In 1988, she became a member of the Brotherhood. The longitudinal Life Chances Study, which she has worked on from its commencement in 1990, is one of her key efforts at the Brothers. 'Left out and missing out: towards new indicators of social exclusion and material deprivation,' and 'Making a difference: building on young people's perspectives on economic adversity,' are two of her recent Australian Research Council partnerships with the Social Policy Research Centre at the University of NSW. Janet holds a MA in Sociology from La Trobe University, as well as a BA and Certificate in Social Studies from the University of Melbourne, where she is also an Honorary Senior Fellow in the School of Social and Political Sciences.
