Kenneth M. Heilman obtained his M.D. from the University of Michigan. In 1963, he received his bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia. In 1970, he joined the University of Florida faculty, and in 1975, he was elevated to Professor. In 1990, he was awarded an endowed chair, making him the first James E. Professor of Neurology, Jr. Rooks

He received the status of Distinguished Professor in 1998. He is also a Clinical and Health Psychology Professor. He is the author or co-author of nine books and has over 400 chapters and papers published in peer-reviewed journals. He has served as President of both the International Neuropsychology Society and the Society for Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology in the past.

For his scientific and instructional contributions to Neurology, he was also awarded the Distinguished Achievement Award by this organization.
