Maupassant: Choix de Contes by Guy De Maupassant

First published in 1952 as the third edition of a 1945 original, this book contains the French text of 20 contes by Maupassant. The stories are prefaced by a biographical and critical introduction by Professor Green, in which he deals with the history of the conte in French literature. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in Maupassant or French prose writing more generally.

Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893) was a prominent nineteenth-century French writer who is regarded as one of the fathers of the contemporary short story as well as one of the best exponents of the form. Many of the stories are set during the 1870s Franco-Prussian War, and several of them depict the futility of war and the innocent bystanders who become changed as a result of the struggle. He wrote over 300 short stories, six novels, three travel books, and one collection of poetry.
