Dorothy Hartley (1893-1985) was born in the Yorkshire town of Skipton. Throughout her long life, she studied and taught painting, but she is most known for a series of writings, including the multi-volume The Life and Work of the People of England. She was an avid traveller who traveled by vehicle from Egypt to the Congo in the 1930s, capturing numerous images that were later shown at the Imperial Institute, and later traveled extensively around the British Isles, which became the foundation for several of her works. She eventually worked as a journalist for the Guardian after a successful career as a writer and illustrator of children's books.
