Melody by Virginia Andrews

Growing up in a small West Virginia mining town, Melody Logan feels secure in her father's unwavering love, despite her gorgeous mother's obvious unhappiness. Then he is killed, and Melody's mother wastes no time in dumping her at Cape Cod with her father's family.

Jerry Oltion won the Nebula Award for his short work Abandon in Place, which also won the prize for best short fiction in 1997. Another story, The Astronaut From Wyoming, co-written with Adam Troy Castro, received a Nebula nomination as well as a Hugo nomination in 2000. He has published twelve books and over one hundred short tales, including four Star Trek titles: a Twilight's End, a Mudd in Your Eye, a Where Sea Meets Sky, and a The Blazing Arrowa (which he co-wrote with his wife Kathy).
