All Leaana wants is to begin a normal life as she embarks on her rite of passage into adulthood. She has the mark of a familiar, but there has never been a girl familiar. Now as she enters adulthood it is too late to become one. Her plans to build her place in society are changed when her rite of passage becomes something unexpected.

Leaana's twin brother Sagan, is a familiar with a white wolf as an animal guide. He is destined to lead his people. His simple rite of passage, to retrieve a sacred stone from the mountains, becomes more meaningful and dangerous than he could possibly imagine. Sagan discovers three new races, and an army determined to destroy his homeland of Natarin, while conquering the neighboring Elf kingdoms.
