METRO / New York / London / Paris by Herb Robinson
Subways are a great equalizer that supersede social barriers separating people in the aboveground city. In his microcosmic portrayals of everyday human dramas and performances, renowned photographer Herb Robinson profoundly captures the interconnection and alienation of human beings underground and on the move. Readers experience the excitement and extraordinary diversity of three celebrated metropolises in motion. METRO / New York / London / Paristells a global-local story of immigrants and natives, showing how our worlds are linked and enriched through our common humanity. Innovative concepts and design by Eve Sandler transport viewers forward in this subterranean world. Woven throughout, commentary by Lady Gaga, James Baldwin, King George Vl, Coco Chanel, and others imparts historical context, insider insights, and humor. METROprovides many meaningful windows into the character of each city and its inhabitants, while illuminating modern issues of identity, equality, and the human condition.
“Herb Robinson possesses an observational clarity and an unfailing photographic empathy that allows us, as viewers, to gain profoundly relatable insights into the everyday beauty and humanity surrounding us”
-- Dr. Zoé Whitley, director of London’s Chisenhale Gallery
“METRO pulses with the rhythm of Herb Robinson’s photographic vision, while Eve Sandler’s sense of editorial timing keeps a pace that is punctuated by her dynamic design and choice of quotes.” -- Dr. Sarah Eckhardt, associate curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts
“Robinson’s Metro is a celebration of the vitality and complexity of daily life within the metro systems of New York, London, and Paris. These insightful photographs illuminate both the isolation and connection of commuters of different ages, backgrounds, and walks of life as they share their passage through the underground spaces of three distinctly different cities.” -- Carrie Springer, curator
“This book is packed with off-kilter, saturated, kinetic, up-close, pulsating images that bring energy and surrealistic style. The addition of quotations by people such as Lady Gaga, James Baldwin, Coco Chanel and others strengthens the narrative being shown.”
-- LENSCRATCH
“It seems the subways are the visual equivalent of the jazz that courses through Robinson's own veins, and maybe somewhat ironically it is their diversity and everyman credentials that are also the true unifying factors in these three portfolios. The subway is the city and the people are the subway."
