Mohammed by Maxime Rodinson
Seventh-century Arabia, although fragmented and in many respects primitive, was moving from a nomadic towards a settled economy, despite the restraints of tribal anarchy. The ideology of Islam - calling for submission to the will of God - moulded this nation into unity and galvanized it into a conquering force which, within 100 years of Mohammed's death, subdued an area stretching from the Pyrenees to the borders of China. This book is not only an account of Mohammed's life, it is also the study of the impact of an ideology upon a society.
Rodinson, Maxime: - Professor Maxime Rodinson was a French historian, sociologist and renowned specialist on Islam and the Arab world. Rodinson was a talented linguist and a committed Marxist, despite his dramatic split from the French Communist Party in 1958. He died in 2004 aged 89.
