Mrs Beeton's Household Book by Isabella Beeton
Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management covered every aspect of running a Victorian household. There were recipes and advice on managing servants, childcare, etiquette, looking after invalids, and even dealing with the tax man. But it is the glimpse into life in Victorian times which is the most fascinating part of her original book and which is reproduced here together with informative commentary from Kay Fairfax and many of the original illustrations. Whether you are looking for her advice on how to make the home the centre of entertainment and family life (the Victorian housewife's main mission in life), or matters of lesser import, such as how to promote the growth of hair, apply leeches or make book polish, what to wear for breakfast or learn Mrs Beeton's views on the rearing and management of children and the care of invalids, you will find it in this highly readable book.
Isabella Mary Beeton was born in London is 1836, where she grew up in a household of twenty-one children. It took Isabella four years to compile her masterwork, publishing Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management in 1861. It remains in print today. Kay Fairfax writes on interiors and gardening for several magazines, including Period House and World of Interiors. She has written several books, including Homemade, Homemade Christmas, 100 Great Stir Fries and The Tranquil Garden. Isabella Mary Beeton was born in London is 1836, where she grew up in a household of twenty-one children. It took Isabella four years to compile her masterwork, publishing Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management in 1861. It contains an enormous amount of information to help people live, in Isabella Beeton's own words, 'economically, tastefully and well'. Her style, imparting information as clearly and simply as possible, was hugely influential. The book sold 60,000 copies in its first year, but Isabella Beeton died four years later, in 1865, aged just twenty-eight. The enduring popularity of Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management is testament to the quality of her advice.
