My British Rail Life by Colin Varney

My British Rail Life focuses on the nationalised rail industry. From leaving school in 1975, to the date of privatisation, 1 April 1994, Colin Varney fashions a recollection, which is an honest and humorous record of his experiences growing up as a British Rail employee. Starting at Southampton Central, as a Signalman’s Booking Lad, he then became a Signalman, Signalling Manager, (and Signalling Instructor later in his career.) He covers his time as a Station Supervisor, Youth Training Scheme Co-ordinator and a short spell in a Telephone Enquiry Bureau, in an industry of constant reorganisation and job-changing.

Born in 1959, Colin joined British Rail straight from school in 1975 and left the Railway industry in 2021. From 1975 to 1994 he worked for British Rail. He is married with two sons and two grandchildren and in his spare time enjoys kayaking, swimming and walking to keep himself fit. He has supported AFC Bournemouth football club all his life. He once walked 150 miles in a week to raise money for Great Ormond St hospital and has had a Remembrance Day song published on YouTube.
