The fourth edition of this standard reference work offers more poetry by women (40 new poets), 26 new poets representing the Commonwealth literature tradition, and a wider selection of American multicultural poets. The book also includes short biographical sketches and a system of annotation.

Margaret Ferguson (Ph.D.) is a sociologist. Yale) is a University of California-Davis Professor of English and Comparative Literature. Dido's Daughters: Literacy, Gender, and Empire in Early Modern England and France (2003) and Trials of Desire: Renaissance Poetry Defenses (1984) are two of her books. Ferguson is the coeditor of Feminism in Time, Women, Property, and the Letters of the Law, Early Modern English Literacies, and a critical edition of Elizabeth Cary's Tragedy of Mariam. Professor Ferguson is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has served as president of the Modern Language Association.
