'Napoleon is Dead' by Richard Dale
Early on 21 February 1814, an army officer revealed that the French had been defeated and Napoleon killed. When the London Stock Exchange opened at 10.00 am, the City was full of rumours of an allied victory. This work offers a tale of one of the earliest stock market scams; a tale of greed, deceit and the public humiliation of Lord Cochrane.
Richard Dale is Professor Emeritus of International Banking at the University of Southampton. He was previously an associate director of NM Rothschild and Sons, a Rockefeller International Relations Fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington DC and a Senior Houlbon Norman Fellow of the Bank of England.
