My mother was a very intelligent and forceful person, a natural writer, who, having left school at 14, put herself through college and university later in life after bringing up four children. I'd have been quite happy if she had gone to university earlier and not bothered bringing me up at all.
Chris Foote Wood (.b. 1940) is the eldest of the four children of Nellie and Jack Mape - his siblings are Penny (b. 1945), Rosalind (b. 1950) and comedy performer, writer, actress, singer and producer Victoria (b. 1953). He has gathered and edited his mother's memoirs to produce as 'Nellie's Book'. He lives in Bishop Auckland, County Durham.
