New Poetries v.3 by Michael Schmidt
New Poetries III includes a dozen writers from around the world. It takes is to real and imagined landscapes in both Americas, eastern and western Europe, Africa and elsewhere. The age range of the poets included is wider than in earlier anthologies, and the formal scope, too, is vast, spanning the Augustan concerns of some and the romantic strategies of others. Each has been brushed by one or another of the wings of mdoernism. Each knows that in verse laughter has a necessary place, and that social and political concerns are inherent in language itself.
Les Murray was born in 1938 and grew up on a dairy farm at Bunyah on the north coast of New South Wales. His award-winning previous works include Subhuman Redneck Poems which won the T.S.Eliot Prize in 1996, Poetry Book Society Special Commendation Conscious and Verbal (1999) and Learning Human (2001) which is currently nominated for the Griffin Prize 2001. He was awarded the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry in 1998.
