J.D. Salinger was born on January 1, 1919, in New York City, and died on January 27, 2010, in Cornish, New Hampshire. His stories appeared in a variety of publications, including The New Yorker. He wrote four book-length works of fiction between 1951 and 1963: The Catcher in the Rye, Nine Tales, Franny and Zooey, and Raise Up the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour--An Introduction.
