Notorious by Hayley Nolan

How did a young housemaid manage to catapult herself into the centre of Henry VIIIs divorce, going head-to-head with Anne Boleyn? And why was the sordid truth behind her story erased? Historian Hayley Nolan uncovers the secrets of the most astounding tale in Tudor history.
In Notorious, Nolan brings her trademark ability to reframe the tangled, often tragic lives of Tudor women to a lesser-known but pivotal subjectHer account of Elizabeth Barton—prophet, prisoner, and a largely uncredited voice of the English Reformation—shines new light on the inner world of a woman history has long side-lined. Nolan doesn't shy away from presenting competing motives and contradictory theories; as she rightly insists, when it comes to Henry VIII's court, the ambiguity is the history. Notorious is a timely reminder that the machinery for discrediting women has a very long paper trail, and another essential piece in the long, unfinished puzzle of Henry and Anne Boleyn
Hayley Nolan is a historian, a TEDx Speaker on Anne Boleyn, Associate of King’s College London, and is currently at the University of Oxford undertaking her second master’s degree. Her biography Anne Boleyn: 500 Years of Lies was the Independent ‘Book of the Month’ and an Amazon History No. 1 bestseller. Hayley completed her first master’s degree at King’s College London in partnership with the British Library’s manuscript department. It was also at King’s College London that Hayley presented the world’s first TEDx talk on her specialist subject of Anne Boleyn. In 2025, she joined The London Archives research project Switching the Lens, searching for Londoners of African, Asian and Caribbean heritage between 1538-1837. Hayley worked with Houses of Parliament to launch the #BeMoreBoleyn campaign, in which she provided tangible steps for women to get involved in politics inspired by Anne Boleyn’s political activism. Now at the University of Oxford, Hayley is conducting an original Tudor research project for an MSt in History. With over 25 million views on her history TikToks to date, Hayley continues to disseminate her research to an audience of almost 200,000 history followers.
