"My 2 young boys and I love this charming little book! They think the animal family pictures are "SO cute" and I really appreciate how it normalizes the nurturing relationship between parents and their childrenIt makes cuddling during storytime that much sweeter." -- Sarah Reece-Stremtan, MD, Pediatric Pain Medicine Doctor and Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine Board Member in Washington, DC The beautiful illustrations in this book can be used to teach all four areas of STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) to young children. I can't wait to use this with my little ones!" -- Sue Cahalane, Science for Kids, Science Teacher (grades PK-4), Holmdel, NJ What a wonderful read for familiesbeautifully illustrated and with an important message about the meaning of parenting." -- Thelma Lager, Advocate for Families, Great-Grandmother (of three), Los Angeles, CA Every parent knows that babies truly are a gift. They are a gift to be nurtured and cherished. This book is a celebration of the bond that is created between a child and his beloved parents. This educational, bilingual, (English and Spanish), early childhood science book highlights the importance of good parenting in an infant's life. It illustrates how a baby needs feeding, grooming and specific care to have his daily needs met. The simple vocabulary, in two languages, will provide a lovely learning experience for your young child. The excellent illustrations will be a wonderful launching pad to discuss feelings and methods of baby care. The illustrations are realistic and beautifully executed with bold colours and loving expressions. It is a perfect time to cuddle your little one under your arm and lovingly explore those feeling of being truly special to each other as you share the book together. There is a comprehensive Teacher's Guide to deepen your child's educational experience and audio tiles available to download for free from Platypus Media. A lot of planning and thought has gone into these enrichment add-ons. I highly recommend this book. -- Marilyn Panton, Blogger Storywraps, May 26 Before we hit the weekend I want to share a new resource. Nurtured and Nuzzled, Criados y Acariciados is an early childhood science book that models healthy choices for new parents, as well as children in preschool through 1st grade (and younger). I think that educators and maternal health providers will especially like this book, too, because it is a great tool for helping new, first-time parents. We know that all babies should be nurtured and nuzzled, right? This book is full of beautiful images of babies of human and animal families and teaches the importance of attachment parenting, breastfeeding, and caretaking. While parents are busy learning the value of nurturing their babies, children will be learning new words, increasing their vocabulary to combat the Word Gap, as well as important scientific concepts.I especially love that this is a bilingual book. And do you know what the best part is? It even comes with a HUGE Teacher's Guide in both English AND Spanish! Inside you'll find lots of lesson plans and activities for using the printable flashcards that are included in the guide. You can download it for free from the publisher's website.I love this book so much, not just for the beautiful illustrations and theme, but also for all the wonderful resources that Platypus Media has provided parents and educators with ways to use this book to get the most out of it.You can purchase the book here. And while you're at it, take the time to explore their website because this is just one book that they carry. There are many others in English and Spanish geared for helping parents.Disclosure: I was a sent a copy of this book and Teacher's Guides for this review. All thoughts and opinions are my own. -- Monica Olivera, Blogger Mommy Maestra, May 13, 2016 Celebrate the bond between parent and child in this stunningly illustrated, bilingual book! !Celebra la union entre padre e hijo con este libro bilingue, ilustrado asombrosamente! When we were deciding what day camps to send Brooke to this summer, we looked at a variety of interesting schools and activities with her that she would enjoy. We ended up having Brooke go to a Spanish Immersion School for seven weeks this summer and it's been a wonderful experience getting to know the teachers and the school and how they incorporate a second language into a child's life. Brooke was already taking a Spanish course one day at week at primary school, so she has learned some basic words and numbers in Spanish and the immersion experience takes learning language at a young age to a whole new level. While all the teachers at her school do speak English as a second language, they only speak to the children in Spanish. Most students who are there are on the same level of Spanish-speaking as Brooke - beginners who don't have family who speak Spanish in the home. While I took six quarters of Spanish in college and earned a Spanish Language Certificate while spending a summer at a language school in Spain in my early 20s, my Spanish is certainly lacking. Children are able to pick up on language at a faster rates than adults because of their brain's natural ability to soak in new language information, so I highly recommend doing a second language immersion experience when your child is young. It's enriching and exciting for kids to learn that there are many different languages in the world and that the more languages you learn and speak at a young age makes it much easier for you to be bi-or-multi-lingual as adults. There are so many wonderful resources out there for families who want to incorporate a second language in the home. Platypus Media recently put out a book called Nurtured and Nuzzled - Criados y Acariciados that includes beautiful images of animals and human families that is in both English and Spanish. Their website offers a FREE downloadable teacher's guide, a pronunciation guide, as well as a way to hear the book narrated! Fantastic! This is a wonderful early childhood STEM book on language and is also a great book that models care-taking and healthy choices in families. We are very impressed with the book and the extra learning materials that Platypus Media offers and look forward to new books from the company. It's the perfect book to incorporate this summer with Brooke's Spanish Immersion Camp experience. The project required thirty months from concept to review copy publication. The biggest challenge it faced was the translation. When asked what prompted her to publish Nurtured and Nuzzled Dia Michels, publisher, Platypus Media, said, Books are like food; they nourish us. Our work, as book publishers, is to excite kids about reading and to give adults the tools they need to keep kids engaged in books. Research shows that kids who love reading are more successful in life. And the latest research on the Word Gap, tells us that brain development is dependent on exposure to words and interactions with adults. We were not looking to publish an early childhood book when Mike Speiser's art landed in our mailbox, but once we saw it, we knew it needed to be put into the world. Books have the power to change lives and, we hope that, in a small way, we can be a part of that process."I chose species that people could relate to," Speiser replied by email when asked how he selected the animals for inclusion. There are so many animals to choose from, but they have different levels of appeal. Some of them you can't possibly use. You don't get a warm feeling when you look at, say, armadillos. A locust has a fascinating life, but no one wants to know about locusts. There are plenty of other species that are appealing, so I picked those. Elephants, penguins and flamingos have universal appeal. I want to do something for the planet. Connecting with people is my way of doing that. Almost everything we care about stems from our childhood experiences. I was lucky. When I was young, I had parents who were very attentive. We always had a cat and she had several litters of kittens. Being a witness to birth had a huge impact on me. I have been drawn to capture the magnificence of animals ever since. Picking animals that have broad appeal encourages readers of the book to help life. It is my way of celebrating life. "I want to reach children at that special age because that's when their brains are developing really quickly. If I can get them to love animals when they are young, I can make a different in that child."Originally the book was all about the artwork and the messaging," Michels said when asked why she decided on a bilingual book. In the winter of 2015, I was speaking at the National Fathers and Families Coalition of America conference in Los Angeles. I had a prototype of the book with me. A number of the attendees suggested it would be a more powerful book if it were bilingual. They stressed that adding Spanish would allow us to reach more kids, and, more importantly, kids who could really benefit from a book like this. I listened, and, as soon as I returned to the office, we started redesigning the book to add the second language." After researching bilingual education (she referred to sciencenaturally.com/files/BilingualEd.pdf) she became convinced that there were more Spanish speakers in the U.S. than there are in Spain; that nearly 25 percent of all K-12 students in the U.S. are Latinoand the percentage is growing." She went on to say that the numbers were compelling."Nurtured and Nuzzled, Criados y Acariciados was our first bilingual book," said Michels when asked about similar projects in the future. Once we made the commitment to make it bilingual, we wanted to carry that commitment to our other projects. Our sister company, Science, Naturally, produces math and science books for upper elementary and middle school. We are incredibly excited about the release of our first bilingual book for this list, One Minute Mysteries: More Short Mysteries You Solve With Science! Misterios de un minuto: !Mas misterios cortos que resuelves con ciencias! It is the bilingual edition of our best-selling One Minute Mystery books. We are now working on the bilingual edition of our bestselling math book: One Minute Mysteries: Short Mysteries You Solve with Math!, Misterios de un minuto: !Misterios que resuelves con matematica! will be released in April 2017. We will carry this commitment forward and work to create bilingual products for the foreseeable future. We hope to do another early childhood book with Mike Speiser exploring different habitats, but it is still on the drawing board."The work of Speiser, an artist who lives next to the Black Hills of South Dakota, has been featured on the covers of Wild Animal Baby magazine and on fundraising products for science organizations. His paintings have been displayed at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. He is involved with efforts to protect the natural world for future generations. He sent his wok to Platypus Media after seeing If My Mom Were A Platypus at his local library. -- Elena de Valle Hispanic Marketing and Public Relations, Sept. 2, 2016 Nurtured and Nuzzled ~ Criados y Acariciados hit bookshelves in February of 2016. This paperback, full color, 24 page, bilingual: English/Spanish book is a true celebration of the bond between parents and their children. The book sells for $9.95 and is also available as an E-book for $8.99. There is also a Teacher's Guide available for free download in both English and Spanish. You are also able to access audio narrations and pronunciation guides in both languages.I found the book to be absolutely precious! Although my own children are in high school, I babysit for my best friend's daughters (my nieces) and they really loved the book. The illustrations are engaging and beautiful. Each page shows baby animals being nuzzled and snuggled by their parent. Honestly, I really loved that it didn't qualify that the parent animal was the mom or the dad. That allows each child to understand that both relationships are valuable and important. Both of my nieces fell in love with the book and the activities in the Teacher's Guide. I could see that this would be great in either a classroom setting or with a Homeschool Co-op. The lessons included in the Teacher's Guide are stimulating and lots of fun for any child age 0-5 years old.I love the fact that this book is written in both Spanish and English. I know a little bit of Spanish, so I found it very fun to go through this book with the girls. Included in the back of the Teacher's Guide are several sets of photo flashcards and worksheets that you can incorporate into the lessons or just play as a game. One of the best parts I found to the illustrations in the book was the broad variety of animals depicted. The 62-page Teacher's Guide helped me find a way to make the most of this wonderful book. Each of the appendices add wonderful activities and additional learning for your child.Appendix A: Pictures for Who Snuggles and Who Nuzzles?" FlashcardsAppendix B: Pictures for Are You My Mother?" (Visual) FlashcardsAppendix C: Pictures for Are You My Mother?" (Audio) FlashcardsAppendix D: Pictures for Babies Can Be Carried Many Different Ways?" FlashcardsAppendix E: WorksheetsOne thing I would love to see would be this very same book made as a cardboard book. I know for the younger children that would make it easier for them to be more hands on with it.If you would like a new twist on the mommy and baby book, this is the way to go! We are definitely moving into the bilingual realm everywhere we turn, and I love the fact that from 0-5 this book can help your children or students learn both English and Spanish as they learn about the importance of the parent child bond. Nurtured and Nuzzled~Criados y Acariciados is super cute and good addition to any home library. -- Barbette Yingst The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, LLC, November 2016
