Joy Kogawa was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1935. For her work, she has received numerous honorary doctorates as well as national and international honors. Obasan, Itsuka, and The Rain Ascends are among her four collections of poetry and three novels. In 1986, Joy Kogawa was made a Member of the Order of Canada. Joy Kogawa Day was recently recognized by the City of Vancouver. In addition, Naomi's Journey is currently in production at the Vancouver Opera and will be traveling next fall.
