Odyssey of the Voice by Jean Abitbol

Odyssey of the Voice takes readers on a journey through the evolution of the voice, from pre-history through the acquisition of language to the use of the voice as an expression of self. The historical journey of the voice helps us to understand the tool that enables us to communicate. This book encompasses everything from the psychological to the physiological; from explaining the care of the voice, including vocal abuse and damage, to celebrating the human voice's highest achievements. After exploring what we know about the voice, Dr. Abitbol examines what he describes as the magic of the voice: the voice as a fingerprint, a reflection of our personality. This magic is revealed in what we do with the voice and how we use it; from the performer's voice to the aging voice, from the use of the voice by the ventriloquist to the use of the voice in expressing our sex and sexuality.
"[T]he scope of this book is truely impressive; it broaches a wide variety of topics and stimulates the reader to want to find out moreIf the reader is searching for an odyssey, or a passionate, provacative romp through everything related to the human voice, this book will indeed provide that enjoyable journey." --Sheri Wells-Jensen & Ludmila Polyakova, Bowling Green State University, Journal of the International Phonetic Association (2014); "Vocal artists and performance teachers who are interested in voice science and medicine, but who hesitate to plunge fully into the jargons of physics and clinical practice, now have an accessible option. Renowned otolaryngologist, phoniatrist, and surgeon Jean Abitol, of the University of Paris, has united his expertise in voice physiology, psychology, and endocrinology with broad knowledge of speech-language development and his personal love for singers and singing. The result is a highly readable, unabashedly poetic yet clinically reliable ode to the wonders of vocalization. --Joanna Cazden, MFA, MS-CCC, Voice and Speech Review (November 2013); "Odyssey of the Voice, written by Jean Abitbol, MD, an otorhinolaryngologist at the Faculty of Medicine in Paris, offers a captivating depiction of the one element that is unique to man: voice and the power to communicate... Dr. Abitbol writes not only as a scientist and medical practitioner, but also as an anthropologist, historian and philosopher. These viewpoints make the subject matter appealing to both the professional and layperson. He interweaves basic scientific knowledge with these many different perspectives, giving the reader a deeper understanding of the connectedness of the various facets that have combined to make the human race what it is today." --Gale Tauberer, SLPD, CCC-SLP, Advance Web (July 2006)
