Have you ever wondered: --How to perform an appendectomy? --How to rob a bank? --How to take a bullet? --How to deliver a baby in a manger? --How to summit Mt. Everest? --How to mend a broken heart?

Gene Doucette is a hybrid author, but in an indirect manner. Gene released four full-length novels with a small independent publisher from 2010 to 2014 (Immortal, Greek Immortal, Fixer, and Immortal at the Edge of the Earth). Gene then began self-publishing novellas set in the same universe as the Immortal series in 2014, at which point he became a hybrid. Gene tried self-publishing a full novel, The Spaceship Next Door, in 2015, after novellas proven to be more profitable than novels. Things went quite well.

So successful, in 2016, Gene reclaimed the rights to the first four novels from the publisher and re-released them, declaring himself no longer a hybrid. Immortal and the Isle of Impossible Things (2016), Unfiction (2017), and The Frequency of Aliens (2017) were among the self-published novels that followed. The Spaceship Next Door was acquired by John Joseph Adams Books (a Houghton Mifflin Harcourt subsidiary) in 2018. Gene was once again a hybrid author when the reprint was released in September of that year.

Several things have happened since then. Gene self-published two more novels, Immortal From Hell at the end of 2018 and Fixer Redux in 2019, and authored a new novel, The Apocalypse Seven, which was picked up by JJA/HMH in September 2019. The book will be released on May 25, 2021. Gene intends to keep writing novels for both traditional and self-published markets as long as it makes sense.

Immortal: Final Call (2020) is his most recent self-published novel. On his Patreon page, he's now working on a massive science fiction world-building project that will culminate in a multi-novel series.
