The family relocated to Dallas, Texas in the 1980s. As an undergraduate, Cantwell enrolled in the University of Southern California's screenwriting department. In August of 2010, he began writing with Chris Rogers, and the two collaborated on the film Halt and Catch Fire. He is one of the creators of the television series Halt and Catch Fire, which he co-created with another person. The Parts You Lose, directed by Cantwell, will be released later this year.
