Oxford by Fred Richards

Found in our archives, the Black's Sketchbooks are a series of books produced in the early 20th century by a group of well-known artists. Each book contains pen sketches of iconic English and Scottish cities and counties. There are also some books on Continental cities such as Paris and Venice. The result is a charming series of books that present a fascinating look at British and European locations as they were almost a century ago. This title is a delightful look at Oxford as it was in 1913.
Fred Richards, R.E., was an etcher, watercolour and black and white artist who studied architecture at the Royal Collage of Art. He travelled widely, became a fellow of the R.E. and lectured at the Royal College of Art between 1922-27. He did some other books in the Black's Sketchbooks series including Rome, Venice, and Windsor and Eton.
