Modern medicine is highly complex, and investigations are a key part of the diagnostic process. With major advances in technology, there are thousands of clinical and laboratory tests available. This book provides a patient-oriented approach to investigation (first part of book) where key symptoms and signs are described along with tests that may be of value in reaching a diagnosis. The remainder of the book is specialty-centred and provides a comprehensive review of all available tests within a given subject. The book emphasises which tests are of value, when tests are not likely to be helpful, along with pitfalls in the interpretation of results. The aim is of the book is to provide a more rational method of investigation and prevent over-investigation which is expensive for the hospital and unpleasant for the patient. The contributors are all active clinicians who are engaged in medical practice, so appreciate the problems faced by junior doctors. The book should also be of value to senior medical students who will be facing finals examinations, and who will soon be on the wards and responsible for ordering tests on their patients.

I found this book to be very useful firsthand when asked to consult on which laboratory test(s) were needed to evaluate a patient with hypernatremia. Sure enough, I turned to the endocrinology section, found the appropriate text, and read off the correct tests to order; all the while sounding like a competent clinical pathologist. Drew Provan, Honorary Reader in Autoimmune Haematology, Barts & The London School of Medicine & Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London, UK Dr Provan is currently Honorary Reader in Autoimmune Haematology at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. He studied molecular genetics at Leicester University before studying medicine. After junior medical posts in the UK, I undertook research at The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute from 1993-4 on an American Traveling fellowship awarded by the Medical Research Council. As a general haematologist, his main area of interest within the field of haematology is immunohaematology which includes diseases such as autoimmune thrombocytopenia (ITP), neutropenia and haemolytic anaemia. He has written several medical books including Molecular Haematology (Blackwell Science), Oxford Handbook of Clinical Haematology and Oxford Handbook of Clinical and Laboratory Investigation, and the ABC of Clinical Haematology (BMJ books).
