Practical Building Conservation: Roofing by Historic England

Roofing looks at traditional roof coverings used on historic buildings. Many materials and systems have been used to provide roof coverings, and the book provides information about their technological evolution, the processes causing deterioration, and ways of assessing problems and solutions. Repairs, maintenance and conflicts with modern practices are also covered.

'This book provides a sound basis for understanding roofs, and allowing informed choices to be made in the long-term interest of the buildingCertainly no student of conservation should be without this book and likewise most professionals should greatly benefit from its clear and thorough practical analysis of a complex subject.' Cornerstone: magazine of The Society for The Protection of Ancient Buildings.

Roofing is a well-written, technically proficient, and comprehensive installation manual that the North American industry would be wise to emulate.’ – Lesley Gilmore, AIA, LEED AP-BC+C, Gilmore Preservation

The contents reflect the work of the Building Conservation and Research Team, their colleagues at Historic England, and their consultants and researchers, who together have many decades of accumulated experience in dealing with deteriorating building materials and systems of all types. This multi-disciplinary team of architects, surveyors, conservators and scientists are responsible for standard setting and research across a wide range of Historic England activities. The team specialises in dealing with the practical, technical and scientific aspects of building materials decay and their treatment. The aim has been to provide practical advice by advocating a common approach of firstly understanding the material or building element and why it is deteriorating, and then dealing with the causes. The books concentrate on those aspects which are significant in conservation terms, and reflect the requests for information received by Historic England.
