Pretty Salma by Niki Daly

"Salma, pretty Salma, please go to market for your old granny who loves you so." This up-to-the-minute "Red Riding Hood" story is set in a South African township with market traders, a crazy-eyed rooster, Anansi the storyteller and a no-good, slick, sly stranger calling himself Mr Dog. The comedy, thrills and shivers of the familiar story lead to a reassuring ending, and Niki Daly's tongue-in-cheek storytelling and hilarious pictures are flavoured with melon, ice-cream and fun.
Well told by Daly, the vibrant illustrations bring to life the exciting goings on in town when Salma goes shopping for her grandmother but manges to wander off the track.. Well worth buying and I shall enjoy reading it aloud to the younger children in my school. School Librarian A super book with wonderful text and lively, humorous pictures. Books for Keeps The story ebbs and flows, building up to an exciting conclusion with a message about personal safety that is delivered with zest. Nursery World
Niki Daly has won many awards for his exuberant work. His groundbreaking Not So fast Songololo (1986), winner of a U.S Parent's Choice Award, paved the way for post-apartheid South African children's books. Since then, he has been published across the globe and has visited and presented talks in several countries. Among his many Frances Lincoln books, Once Upon a Time was an Honor Winner in the US Children's Africana Book Awards of 2004. Jamela's Dress - first in the Jamela series - was another milestone book, chosen by the ALA as a Notable Children's Book and by Booklist as one of the Top 10 African American Picture Books of 2000, and winning both the Children's Literature Choice Award and the Parent's Choice Silver Award. Niki lives with his wife, the illustrator Jude Daly, in Mowbray, a bustling Cape Town suburb.
